Mike Tolhurst calls it a day
At the tender age of 72, Mike Tolhurst, of Space Airconditioning plc, has decided to retire – finally!
Mike hit the 'official' retirement age over 7 years ago, when he was Branch Manager of the Bristol office, but he decided that he was much too young at heart to bow out of the industry at that time and stayed on as Regional Marketing Manager.
Following a couple of knee operations in the last year, Mike has decided that whilst the spirit is still willing – the flesh is not so keen and perhaps after 59 years of continuous employment, much of which has been spent pounding his West Country and Channel Islands sales beat, it is time to give full retirement a go.
"I've thought about retiring properly on several previous occasions," said Mike, "but I have either been talked out of it or changed my mind!
The fact is I thoroughly enjoyed my job, Space Air and all the customers I have worked with for so many years and was happy to carry on as long as possible."
The Directors and staff of Space Air held a retirement party for Mike at their Guildford HQ and presented him with a Calloway "White Hot" putter.
Managing Director, Neil Afram stated "Mike has been a great friend since 1978, and a real asset to Space Air, he has helped considerably in our success and growth and I am very grateful for that. Even in more recent times when he has been working a shorter week, Mike consistently exceeded his sales targets. He really has set an example to our industry's younger sales engineers in terms of diligence, care and enthusiasm for his profession." Neil concluded, "Mike deserves to take things easier now and enjoy more time at home and out on the golf course. Everyone at Space Air and I am sure his customers will join me in wishing him a long and happy retirement."
